Bishop was born and raised in Oakland Country, Michigan. Bishop graduated from University of Michigan in 1989, and went on to earn his J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law. Bishop is also a licensed real estate broker and has owned two local real estate businesses, Freedom Realty, Inc. and Pro Management, Inc. Bishop is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, District of Columbia Bar, Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, He previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, and the Michigan State Senate from 2002-10 where he served as majority leader. In 2014 Bishop was elected as representative to Congress for Michigan’s 8th congressional district, and successfully ran for re-election in 2016. As a Congressman Bishop supports pro-life legislation and opposes the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. He opposes gun control legislation and championed right-to-carry legislation. He voted to exempt some banks from the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. He voted for withholding federal funds from Sanctuary cities --states and localities that chose not to follow federal immigration laws.

Elissa is a life-long public servant who has been proud to work for both Republican and Democratic leaders who put the good of country over politics.. After college at Cornell University and a few years working for non-profit organizations, she went to graduate school at Columbia University in New York City. Elissa was recruited into the CIA directly out of graduate school, where she was trained as a Middle East analyst and served three tours in Iraq. Elissa served in the White House under both President Bush and President Obama as a senior leader in the Pentagon, where she negotiated some of the department’s most sensitive national security matters. Elissa is married to a retired Army officer.
