Assumed congressional office in 2003. Former Career: Iowa Senate. Education: Northwest Missouri State University. Currently resides in Kiron. Steven King is a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Iowa’s 4th congressional district. King was born on May 28, 1949 in Storm Lake, Iowa. He attended Northwest Missouri State University from 1967 to 1970, majoring in math and biology, but did not graduate. While in college, King received "2S" deferments in 1967, 1968, and 1969. Prior to his political career, King worked as a businessman. In 1996 he was elected to the Iowa Senate, and served until 2002. King was first elected to the US House in 2003 and has been reelected every year since. As a Congressman King is considered an outspoken fiscal and social conservative. In 2015 King was named the least effective member of Congress by InsideGov due to his persistent failures to get legislation out of committee. King is a staunch opponent of immigration and multiculturalism, and he has a history of making racist comments. In 2014 King was one of 19 members of Congress inducted into the Human Rights Campaign’s "Hall of Shame" for his opposition to LGBT equality. King has dismissed concern over global warming, calling it a "religion" and claiming efforts to address climate change are useless. In May 2014, King compared the torture and prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib prison to "hazing". King supports broad legal latitude for individual gun ownership. In July 2017 when the House Appropriations Committee allocated $1.6 billion to fund the US-Mexico border wall, King called for an additional $5 billion for the wall, to be paid for with federal dollars coming from Planned Parenthood, food stamps, and other federal welfare programs.

J.D., a 5th generation Iowan, he pursued a professional baseball career, playing in Canada for the Saskatoon Legends, for his hometown Sioux City Explorers over the course of 4 seasons, and in Europe. Between baseball seasons, J.D. began a career as a litigation paralegal, specializing in eDiscovery, Intellectual Property law and trials—a career that taught him the ins-and-outs of the law, good governance, and how to fight for people’s rights. Though a first-time candidate for office, J.D. is a lifelong Democrat who in October of 2002 took a 20 hour one-way bus ride to protest the Iraq war and has volunteered on local, state and national campaigns. He is still an avid sports fan, loves to play cards, enjoys black coffee, and Casey’s pizza.
