Lisa, with a PhD in economics from Colorado, moved to Washington in 1980, where she taught economics at Eastern Washington and Gonzaga Universities before serving in the Washington State Legislature for more than 20 years in the 3rd district. She was the first Democratic woman to hold the position as Senate Majority Leader where she broke decades-long logjams in education and health care. She participated in many community organizations, including against domestic violence, for better health care and prescription drug initiatives. In 2013 she became chancellor of Washington State University Spokane going on to make it a world-class center for health sciences.
