Chintan Desai was born in San Luis Obispo, California after his parents immigrated from Mumbai, India in search of a better life. With little money and few friends, they built a new life for themselves and their son. Chintan’s father worked at a local fast food restaurant and Chintan’s mother worked at an arts and crafts store, both working second jobs at a motel. Through their labors, Chintan attended the University of California, Davis, where he studied Political Science. After graduation and driven by a commitment to public service, Chintan joined Teach for America and moved to Helena-West Helena Arkansas and took a position as a 5th-grade social studies teacher. He has held that position since 2010. He says he is running for Congress for many reasons mostly pertaining to the lives of his students and their parents. Desai states “They are just not getting a great shot at life”. He believes “…that all Arkansans must be heard and that there is irreplaceable value to one’s home and community. We should not have to leave the Natural State to find prosperity. But we might have to fight to make prosperity a reality.”
